Getting started
What is Savenello?
Savenello keeps your accounts, spending, budgets, and savings goals in one place. Sign-in is invite only during the preview, and only invited emails get a link. You can open the demo to see sample numbers before you have an account.
How do I sign in?
Open the link we email you, then enter the 6 digit code from your authenticator app. A recovery code works one time if you cannot use the app. Log in if you already have an account.
How do I get help?
Email support@savenello.com any time. After you sign in, the support form takes a topic, a subject of up to 120 characters, and a message of up to 5,000 characters. You can send 5 requests a day. Topics are Question, Bug, Feature request, Bank connection, Billing, and Other.
Banks and accounts
Can I connect a real bank?
Real banks are coming soon, and the preview uses test data. The connect page does not ask for a real bank login, and Savenello does not see your bank password. When a connection needs attention, the morning card on Home asks you to reconnect.
What can I add on Accounts?
You can add things you own, such as a home, a vehicle, gold and precious metals, collectibles, cash, or something else. You type the value, and the app does not look it up. Those amounts are included in net worth with your cash and what you owe.
Reviewing transactions
What is the review queue?
Review holds transactions until you approve them, grouped by merchant. Looks right already has a confident category filled in. Needs a look covers a new merchant, a refund, an unusual amount, a possible transfer, or anything without a confident category. Pending charges can be approved after they post.
How do I approve them?
You can approve one, approve all in Looks right, approve all from one merchant, or approve the ones you selected. Change the category first if it is wrong. You still approve each transaction when a rule suggests the category. On a wide screen, J and K move, A approves, and C opens the category.
Can I split a transaction or add a note?
A split is two or more parts, in dollars, that add up to the transaction. A note is saved on its own and can be up to 500 characters. Reopening a transaction puts it back in Review. The category and the note stay, and a split is cleared.
Can I change a batch of transactions?
On the transactions list you can select rows on this page and apply one category. You can also always use that category for those merchants. That choice becomes a merchant rule, and you still approve each new transaction.
Categories
How do I edit categories?
Categories are grouped as Spending, Income, and Transfers. You can rename one, change its icon, give it a parent, hide it, or merge it into another of the same type. A subcategory uses its parent's type and cannot have its own subcategory. Simple view shows parent spending, and Detailed view lists every visible spending category.
What is a merchant rule?
A rule suggests a category for a merchant. You still approve each transaction. You can make one while approving, by choosing to always use that category for the merchant. The list of rules is under Settings.
Budgets and income
How do monthly and yearly budgets work?
Budgets are a plan, not a limit, and nothing gets blocked. A budget can be monthly or yearly. A yearly amount is set aside one twelfth each month. A blank amount, or 0, clears a yearly plan, and you can switch it to monthly.
How does expected income work?
You can add a paycheck, side income, benefits, interest, or another source. How often can be weekly, every 2 weeks, twice a month, monthly, yearly, irregular, or one time, and we turn that into a monthly amount for you. Twice a month uses the days of the month, such as 1 and 15, monthly uses one day, and weekly or every 2 weeks uses the next pay date. One time uses the expected date, and that amount is not part of the monthly total.
What is left to spend?
Left to spend starts from whichever is higher, the income you expect or the income already received. It then takes out planned savings, bills, and other spending. If a budget is set and income is still $0, the card links to Budget. If expected income and budgets are both empty, Home hides the card and shows a short link to Budget, even if some income already came in.
Goals and net worth
How do savings goals work?
Savings goals sit beside the spending plan. You type the name, how much is saved, a target, and an optional date and note. The app does not move money or set any aside. Progress is shown as a percent of the target.
How is net worth worked out?
Net worth is your cash plus the assets you typed, minus what you owe. The page shows Cash, Assets, and Owed. The chart stays even when there is only one point, and it fills in as more months of balances come in. You type each asset value, and the app does not look it up.
Reports
Which time frames can I use?
You can view this month, last month, this quarter, year to date, the last 12 months, or a custom start and end. Compare that range with the previous period or the same period last year. The report shows income and spending for the dates you picked.
How are subscriptions found?
Subscriptions come from approved and pending transactions. Transfers and income are left out. A match needs the same merchant on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly rhythm, a similar amount, and 3 charges including the latest. You can mark a row as a subscription, a bill, other, or not recurring, and the cost total counts subscriptions only.
Will I see a price change?
When a subscription amount goes up, the morning card on Home names the merchant and says it went from the old amount to the new one. That line links to Subscriptions. Bills and other recurring charges stay on the list, but they are not in the subscription cost total.
Security and privacy
How do I set up my authenticator?
The first time you sign in, scan the code with your authenticator app, or type the key, then enter the 6 digit code from the app. That step expires in 5 minutes. Savenello then shows 10 recovery codes. Each code works one time, this is the only time they are shown, and you should save them somewhere safe, separate from your phone.
Lost your phone?
Open the sign-in link from your email, then enter a saved recovery code instead of the 6 digit code. Each code works one time, and using one signs out your other sessions. If you do not have a saved code, email support@savenello.com.
How does the authenticator work?
Sign-in is an email link plus a 6 digit code from your authenticator app. A recovery code works one time, and you can make new ones with a current code. You are signed out after 30 minutes of inactivity, or after 12 hours. We keep a coded version of your network, not your actual IP address, for 90 days.
Can I add someone else to my household?
Household sharing is coming soon. There is no invite screen today, so you cannot add another person yet. The account you sign in with is the one for this household.
How do I export or delete the household?
Only the owner can export or delete this household. Export downloads a CSV of transactions, splits, categories, budgets, assets, and goals, and it asks for an authenticator code when one is required. Deleting asks you to type the household name. It ends the bank connections and removes this household's data, and it cannot be undone.
Is there an activity log?
Settings keeps a log of changes in the household, newest first. The list is kept and is not edited. The privacy policy explains what we store. Public pages count visits with Google Analytics, and the signed-in app does not.
Billing and the beta
What do beta members get?
Beta members who confirm their email get 2 months free at launch. No credit card is needed to join, and joining the waitlist does not by itself create an account. After those 2 free months, the normal plan applies. We may end this offer at any time before launch, as the terms also say.
What is the price?
The price shown is $9.99 a month, and pricing is not final. After launch, new members start with a 15 day free trial. Cancel before the trial ends and you won't be charged. Paid plans are not offered yet.
